Here is a very timely article about the crisis of world hunger - based to a large extent on the wasteful use of many foods, including grain - and the "solution" in the Orthodox ascetical tradition of fasting. In addition to the spiritual value of ascetical fasting, there is now the added "gift" of contributing to our shared human responsibility of reducing the crisis of world hunger. We had it right all along!
